Supervision for Occupational Therapists

FAQs – Your Questions Answered

Although I live in the Yorkshire area I have been continually supervising occupational therapists from Skye to Dorset for over 25 years. I currently supervise over 100 Occupational Therapists nationally and globally via Teams, Zoom and telephone.

I really enjoy working with everyone, well love it actually, and think my testimonials speak for themselves.

Why have supervision?

The Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) Standards of Professional Practice 2017 state that, ‘as a practitioner, you receive regular professional supervision and appraisal, where you use critical reflection to review your practice.’ The Care Quality Commission, (C.Q.C.) 2013 say that professional supervision should be used by, ‘legally responsible registered providers…and staff across all care settings.’ It is also recommended by the Health and Care Professions Council, (HCPC).

What will supervision be like with Margaret?

My testimonials on this site give you a good feel for how people find my supervision.
We build up a great working relationship and work hard to tackle whatever current issues/dilemmas/problems you bring. I work in a solution focused way. I always email you a summary, action plan and evidence of each  HCPC requirement so your CPD file is always current and up to standard if you are audited.

How do I organise supervision?

Easily. Depending upon how you work, we can set up dates/times for the next 6/12 months, or you can email me and suggest dates and times each month (I do get booked up quickly).

How often should I have supervision?

Again, it’s entirely up to you. Most people find that one/two hours monthly works well and they get into a rhythm. Every six weeks is fine, but a little harder to keep up a rhythm, once every two months definitely needs two hours because of everything that happens in between.

How much will supervision cost?

,

If  you are self funding it’s just £70 per hour, which includes a written summary of the supervision session, an action plan, recorded evidence of each HCPC standard, and any emails/phone calls if needed in between sessions. I normally email a record of your supervision and an invoice normally within 3 working days. Every 12 months I send you a summary of your achievements for the HCPC audit and yearly appraisal. If your organisation is funding your supervision it £85 for the same package. I have a proposal that I can send to them to explain the value of professional supervision for their organisation.

TESTIMONIALS

  • Supervision has been a must-have support for me. Starting and developing an OT service within a company without OT can, and has been at times, a challenging experience. Although there has been great support from my place of work it is good to talk through ideas and to problem-solve issues arising with someone from the same professional background. Sometimes working as a lone OT, it’s difficult to know if you are doing the right thing and supervision does help to put things into perspective. I’m 4 years down the line in developing the service from scratch and now have a thriving OT service which is ever changing and developing for the better. The supervision I have had from Margaret has been integral to this’. ‘Supervision has helped to keep me sane’

  • My professional supervision from Margaret Spencer has been instrumental in enabling me to successfully meet the challenges of establishing two OT services within the Third Sector and beginning a career as an independent practitioner. The invaluable support and guidance received has empowered me with confidence during my transition from student to practitioner and to promote the profession in developing areas. Margaret provides a thoroughly inspirational, high quality service which I would recommend to any professional seeking external professional and/or clinical supervision.

  • Margaret has been an invaluable support as I transitioned into independent practice and built my business over the last couple of yearsRegular supervision has given me the opportunity to have a space to discuss ideas and get clarity on what I want to do, and having Margaret as a sounding board reminds me that I do have the skill set to achieve what I want.

It’s helped me push forward when I naturally want to hesitate, and I don’t think I would have gotten this far (or not nearly as quickly) without Margaret’s encouragement.
