Relationships and Sexuality Workshops

The workshops

There are 7 workshops in total (each lasts 1½ hours)

Group size maximum of 10 participants (mixed gender closed group)

Aims

To enable people with learning disabilities to:

make informed choices about forming relationships, explore their own sexuality through a person-centred approach and encourage choice and control of their lives.

About the group

The mixed gender group provides an opportunity to develop shared understanding of the impact of puberty and emerging sexuality on their selves and the opposite gender.  Relevant issues are explored and discussed in a confidential, safe and trusting environment within a closed group.

Developing an awareness of this knowledge enhances each individual’s ability to take control over their relationships and increases their level of competence which, in turn, increases self-esteem, confidence and the ability to be safe in their sexual practices.

Learning outcomes

  • Explore the differences between women’s and men’s bodies as they develop and identify a common language for body parts.
  • Increase awareness of female and male bodily hygiene.
  • Explore a range of relationships and their emotional impact: inappropriate touch, friends, boy/girlfriend and a safe, caring relationship.
  • Explore and discuss alternatives to sexual intercourse within a safe, caring relationship
